We respect other people's work and expect the same for ours. Here is how to report infringement, and what happens after you do.

Who owns the content on this site

The guides, text, illustrations and design on Buddymagazine.org are original work owned by Buddy Magazineunless a page says otherwise. Figures we quote from public bodies such as the WHO, the CDC or the FDA are attributed and linked to their source, and remain the work of those organizations.

We respond to notices of alleged copyright infringement under the US Digital Millennium Copyright Act, 17 U.S.C. § 512. If you believe something on this site uses your work without permission, the steps below get it in front of the right person fastest.

How to report infringement

Email hello@buddymagazineorg.com with "DMCA notice" in the subject line. To be valid under section 512(c)(3), a notice needs all six of these:

  1. Your physical or electronic signature, or that of someone authorized to act for the copyright owner.
  2. Identification of the copyrighted work you say is infringed. If several works are covered, a representative list is enough.
  3. The exact URL on Buddymagazine.org where the material appears, and enough detail for us to find it on the page.
  4. Your name, postal address, phone number and email address.
  5. A statement that you have a good-faith belief the use is not authorized by the copyright owner, its agent or the law.
  6. A statement that the information in the notice is accurate and, under penalty of perjury, that you are the owner or authorized to act for the owner.
A notice missing any of these elements may not be actionable, and we may write back asking for the missing detail. Knowingly misrepresenting that material infringes can make you liable for damages under section 512(f), so please check fair use and licensing before you file.

What happens after you report

We aim to acknowledge a complete notice within five business days. If the notice is valid, we remove or disable access to the material and note the change. If a contributor supplied the material, we tell them what was removed and why, and pass on a copy of the notice.

Counter-notification

If material you supplied was removed and you believe that was a mistake or a misidentification, you can send a counter-notice to the same address. Under section 512(g)(3) it must include:

  • Your physical or electronic signature.
  • Identification of the material that was removed and the URL where it appeared before removal.
  • A statement under penalty of perjury that you have a good-faith belief the material was removed by mistake or misidentification.
  • Your name, address and phone number, and consent to the jurisdiction of the federal district court for your address (or, outside the US, any judicial district where the service provider may be found), and agreement to accept service of process from the person who filed the original notice.

We forward valid counter-notices to the original complainant. Unless they tell us within 10 to 14 business days that they have filed a court action, the law allows the material to be restored.

Repeat infringement

Anyone who repeatedly supplies infringing material will no longer be able to contribute to Buddymagazine.org.

Quoting a short passage with credit and a link to the original page needs no permission. Republishing a whole guide, translating one, or using our illustrations in a product does. Our terms and conditions set out exactly what is allowed, and permission requests go through the contact page.
